Meet the Middle Farm Locals
Here at Middle farm we have a smallholding with a range of animals for our guests to enjoy. Our Valais Blacknose sheep are ridiculously friendly and cute, the Shire horses are magnificent to see around the farm and our Soay sheep are a rare breed from the Outer Hebrides. Like all good smallholdings, there are chickens and ducks too!
Valais Blacknose Sheep
Our Valais Blacknose are without question the cutest breed of sheep you’ll ever meet! Originally from the Swiss Alps, they love all the attention you can offer, especially a tummy tickle and a stroke! The literally skip around the field and are the most sociable and friendly sheep – more like a dog than sheep. We love them!

Shire Horses
We have up to seven Shire horses on site here at Middle Farm. These magnificent animals are involved in a range of activities including demonstrations of traditional agricultural farming at Action Scott Heritage Farm, Weddings, Funerals and not to mention appearing on films & TV shows. Owned and trained by Steve Ledsham for many years you can simply admire from afar or book a full experience day at Acton Scott. But wait, There’s More…
Soay Sheep
Soay sheep are a critically endangered breed according to the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. Wild, independent, and highly inquisitive, our flock of thirty ewes, lambs, and one fine ram alternate between high summer hills and lower farm fields. They shed their own wool naturally, require no hoof care, and remain incredibly healthy without antibiotics. These hardy ewes also lamb entirely without human intervention every April, making them a wonderfully self-sufficient breed.
Chickens
We keep a diverse mix of chickens, including an ever-growing number of very friendly Warrens. They roam a spacious, tree-filled grassy pen situated at the back of the farm. Feeding on bugs, fresh grass and mixed corn, they produce eggs with rich, delicious yellow yolks. Except for a few quiet winter months, their fresh eggs are always available for guests and passing travellers to purchase from our box at the farm gate.
Ducks
Our active Aylesbury ducks are always highly entertaining to watch as they forage around their grassy pen and paddle happily in their custom pond. These charming, energetic birds are a wonderful addition to our farm family, keeping themselves busy throughout the day. Much like our chickens, they produce fantastic, high-quality eggs that we regularly collect and make available for visitors to purchase through our roadside egg box.
